History of Kiwanis

The first Kiwanis Club was organized in Detroit Michigan, in 1914.
The group received a charter from the State of Michigan on January 21, 1915, and this is regarded as the birth date of Kiwanis. The founding Club's name is Detroit Kiwanis Club No.1 in recognition of its heritage.

The Name "Kiwanis" was coined from an expression of the American Indians in the Detroit area, which was found in Bishop Barrga's dictionary of Otchipew language. The expression "Num Kee-wan-is" means broadly, "we trade or we share our talents." As a coined word, however, "Kiwanis" has no meaning except as the name of a leading International Service Club. The Kiwanis Motto, "We Build", was adopted in 1920.

Kiwanis became international with the organization of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton in Ontario, Canada, November 1916. However, the organization's official name, "Kiwanis Club", was not changed to "Kiwanis International" until the so-called Constitution Convention in Denver in 1924.

The Miami Shores Kiwanis Club organized in 1946 recently added "North Dade" to reflect the wider area of service.

Today the Kiwanis Family of members has about one half million, and has adopted "Young Children: Priority One" as its main identity.

Club Meetings

We at Kiwanis of Miami Shores-North Dade have our general membership luncheon meeting promptly every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month, from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Miami Shores Country Club located at 10000 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami Shores, Florida.

We start on time-end on time serve heart healthy lunches and have excellent programs.
